Pathway lighting helps you see where you are walking. Uplighting helps you see what is worth looking at.
We set fixtures low and aim them up at tree trunks, canopies, house fronts or a standout plant. The light climbs the bark and spreads into the branches, which gives your yard depth instead of a flat, dark backdrop. Established Ormond Beach neighborhoods with big oaks and tall palms are a great match. The U.S. Department of Energy's principles for responsible outdoor lighting are a good guide to keeping light low and well aimed.
One or two well-aimed lights on a big live oak often do more than a dozen small ones scattered around the bed. Less clutter, more impact.
Ground-mounted uplights do not hurt trees. Problems come from fixtures or wires strapped tightly around trunks or branches, which can cut into the bark as the tree grows. We keep fixtures on the ground and leave room for growth.
Palms are usually lit with one or two fixtures at the base aimed up the trunk into the fronds. Tall palms need a narrower beam so the light reaches the top instead of spreading out low.
Careful aiming does most of the work. Shields and glare guards on the fixtures keep light pointed at the tree or wall and out of windows, eyes and the yard next door.
